The blue - bump of 3 C 273

چکیده
We present optical and ultraviolet observations of 3C 273 covering the whole life of the IUE satellite. We analyze the variability properties of the light curves, and find that two variable components, written B and R respectively, must contribute to the blue-bump emission in this object. The B component produces most of the variability in the ultraviolet domain. A maximum time scale of variability of about 2 yr identical at all wavelengths is found. If discrete events produce this component, the event rate is ∼3-30 yr−1. Assuming an isotropic emission, each event must liberate about 1051 erg in the form of optical-to-ultraviolet radiation. The spectral properties of the B component suggest that reprocessing on a truncated disk, or partially-thick bremsstrahlung may be the emission mechanism. We find evidence of a lag of a few days between the light curves of the B component at optical and ultraviolet wavelengths. An irradiated geometrically-thick accretion disk model satisfies all the constraints presented here. Neither the variability properties, nor the spectral properties of the R component can be accurately measured. This component varies on very long time scales, and may completely dominate the historical light curve of 3C 273 in the optical domain. Combining knowledge from other wavelengths, we obtain several indications that this component could reveal the “blazar” 3C 273. In particular, the light curve of this component is very similar to the hard X-ray light curve.

A First Close Look at the Balmer-edge Behavior of the Quasar Big Blue Bump
We have found for the first time a Balmer edge feature in the Big Blue Bump emission of a quasar. The feature is seen in the polarized flux spectrum of the quasar, where all the emissions from outside the nucleus are scraped off and removed. The existence of the Balmer-edge absorption feature directly indicates that the Big Blue Bump is indeed thermal and optically-thick.
متن کاملThe variable component of the blue - bump in quasars and SeyfertgalaxiesST
The ultraviolet spectral slope of individual Seyfert 1 galaxies and quasars, measured using IUE observations, varies considerablywith time. Neither accretiondisks nor opticallythin emission models can explain these variations. A superimposition of two components can easily solve the problem. We propose here a method based on the variability properties of these objects to disentangle various comp...
متن کاملThe Shape of the Big Blue Bump as Revealed by Spectropolarimetry
Thermal models for the quasar Big Blue Bump generally lead to bound-free continuum features, which may be in absorption or emission. Searches for Lyman edges attributable to quasar atmospheres (in particular accretion disk atmospheres) have been ambiguous at best, but various relativistic and non-LTE effects may make them hard to detect. The Balmer edge features tentatively predicted by such mo...
متن کاملEvidence for Polarized Synchrotron Components in Radio-optical Aligned Quasars
A tendency for the axes of double-lobed radio quasars to be aligned with the electric vectors of optical polarization in the active galactic nuclei is well-known. However, the origin of the polarization and reason behind its correlation with radio morphology is not yet established. From accurate spectropolarimetry of 7 quasars which show this alignment effect, we find that the polarization is u...
متن کاملBig Blue Bump and Transient Active Regions in Seyfert Galaxies
An important feature of the EUV spectrum (known as the Big Blue Bump, hereafter BBB) in Seyfert Galaxies is the narrow range in its cutoff energy E c from source to source, even though the luminosity changes by 4 orders of magnitude. Here we show that if the BBB is due to accretion disk emission, then in order to account for this “universality” in the value of E c , the emission mechanism is pr...
